Hi Readers, Aliens and Creatures, here is my honest review of ‘Awakening’…. A book that took me over two months to get through. 😭😭😭 But I did it!! *cries drammatically*
▪️BASICS:
Official title: Awakening
My title: Norse Drama and Lief
Author: Kevin D. Miller
Fav character: Arias
Type: Book
3.1/5
▪️INTRO:
Lief, the bumbling human bartender come blessed by the gods to be a warrior of Ragnarok midgardian, has ONE job for 200/347 pages – to master the rage caused by the Beserker power, and he fails – spectacularly
▪️REVIEW:
Jump into the world where Norse mythology crosses over into the everyday life of the Los Angeles living Lief; Sole child of immigrant parents from Iceland and progeny of the fearsome Beserker lineage.
Lief, an unassuming and VERY young adult man will be called and tested beyond his capabilities to deal. He will, however push through, after grueling sessions and… Make it? 😓🤦🏻♀️💁🏻♀️
Expect lots of twists, turns, naming, somewhat uncomfortable detailing of fight scenes, and a real attempt at making Norse mythology enter your life.
Overall it was not my cup of tea, although it did hold promise, and as I mentioned, the beginning was pretty cool.
▪️OBSERVATIONS:
▪️🤦🏻♀️ It was a struggle getting through this book. Although it started off strong, I found myself losing interest the first 100 pages in, and frankly just begging it to end.
▪️I disliked the MC, for reasons you will see below, but I also was not a fan of the writing style. The author could have:
– Made more use of pronouns, Lief’s name is mentioned way too many times for comfort;
– Allowed the fights to flow more freely, instead we have abrubt cutting between ‘scenes’ and a ridiculous attention to random details; and
– Not sent us into Lief’s mind every time he was being insufferable, a donkey, or ridiculously immature.
▪️CONCLUSION:
There is very little to like about Lief in my estimation. He is arrogant, quick to speak, slow to think and very unprepared for this mission. He tries to demand respect but has none to give and is overall annoying and impatient
☀️Themes
▸Respect:
There are several instances where Lief believe he is not being treated with respect, however he has failed to earn any.
This is a RANDOM human male, who is trekking into new realms WAY beyond his comprehension, he is dealing with people who are actively fighting, and he believes he deserves respect, why? Because he can get angry? 😒😃
▸Language:
English speaking Lief, travels to different REALMS and seems to expect those who live in these realms to speak the same English as he does.
He, who was trained by an “elf” NEVER takes the time or initiative to ask to be taught some words for his journey, but BOLDLY and ARROGANTLY scoffs at the fact that the peoplw TRYING to communicate with him to HELP him, speak in a garbled mess, and or heavily accented English…😒
How about YOU learn another language Lief…and please, be fluent, even when you hardly use said language.

QUESTION:
☀️ Over to you. How do you find reading about annoying characters? Will they ruin the book for you?☀️
Over to you!
