    Author Q&A

We sat down with Author Mary Anne Edwards to ask her a few questions about being an author and her book Brilliant Disguise.

QUESTION 1. What is your favorite childhood book?

I loved the Trixie Belden Mystery Series.

QUESTION 2. Have you ever considered writing under a pseudonym, why or why not?

Yes. If I write a different genre, like a cozy, I will use a pen name.

QUESTION 3. How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?

I get upset and complain to everyone who’ll listen. LOL! Then once I calm down, I read all my positive reviews. Sometimes I’ll read the bad reviews of bestsellers in my genre. That assures me that I’m not the only one who gets a bad review.

QUESTION 4. Are there therapeutic benefits to modeling a character after someone you know?

Yes. It makes me realize how lucky I am to have certain people in my life. And I can get even with those who get on my bad side without going to jail. LOL!

QUESTION 5. What is the most difficult part of your writing process?

Working in the red herrings and keep the story believable.

QUESTION 6. What comes first for you — the plot or the characters — and why?

The plot comes first. I need the murder, the weapon, and the why before I can cast the players.

QUESTION 7. Would you and your main character get along? Why, why not?

Oh, yes. Charlie McClung is my husband. Yes, good men do exist.

QUESTION 8. If you were to write a spin-off about a side character, which would you pick?

I am considering writing a cozy with Charlie’s ma and aunt for the amateur sleuths.

QUESTION 9. What part of the book did you have the hardest time writing?

The middle of the book. I know the beginning and the end. It’s making the two come together; that’s the hard part.

QUESTION 10. What is a significant way your book has changed since the first draft?

In five out of seven of my books, the killer changed but not before I finished the book. Other than that, not much.

QUESTION 11. How would you describe your book’s ideal reader?

Women who love edgy traditional mysteries and believe in true love find my books appealing. But there are quite a few men who love my books, too.

QUESTION 12. How do you celebrate when you finish your book?

A Me day! I watch whatever I want all day. I drink mimosas and snack on whatever I want to eat. In other words, I have a fat and lazy day.

    BRILLIANT DISGUISE FEATURE
